Highland Cattle

Highland Cattle

Highland cattle are an ancient breed, originating in the highlands and western isles of Scotland. Living there unchanged for centuries under rugged conditions and severe climate, the highland cow developed a thick, shaggy double coat, not backfat, to survive. Unlike many modern, commercial breeds, Highlands have not lost the ability to thrive on grass alone.
A herd of Highland cattle is called a FOLD.

Contact us to order our grassfed Highland beef –  either cut and wrapped and frozen or for entire fresh never frozen sides (halves) and wholes  – we can arrange shipments to the lower Mainland and Williams Lake, British Columbia.

In addition, this year we will be offering Highland cattle hides – the wonderful hairy hide of a steer, tanned to perfection for your wall, floor, sofa or bed, in a variety of natural colours.  These can be shipped to addresses across Canada.

Heathcliff of Tatlayoko

When Heathcliff was born we knew immediately he was a handsome bull worth keeping intact. His mother, Tartan Precious Black Pearl was a wonderful short but broad old black cow - Heathcliff was her last calf - a last chance to have some stellar Ontario genetics in your fold. His sire, Evermore of Tatlayoko is a handsome young black bull now pursuing a career with another fold. We were concerned that Heathcliff was slow to grow, probably due to his mother's age and limited milk. We kept him for time, valuing him for his pedigree and sweet temperament. A few summers up the mountain has really given him a growth spurt, he has a great appetite and is really coming into his looks. Look at those fabulous horns and with a glossy black coat and great pedigree a great way to add some good genetics to your fold.

Mahonia of Tatlayoko

#Registration pending Female Born: June 3, 2024 Yellow Mahonia is our only yellow heifer of the year. She is named for a yellow flower and is a pretty little heifer. She is still in her calf coat but we can see she is filling out under it, nice hind quarters and good head and balanced. As one of the younger heifers she is still a little shy but a week in the barnyard made a world of difference. Dam: Famatina of Tatlayoko Sire: Fergus of Tatlayoko

Jack Knife of Tatlayoko

Jack Knife has really come into his own this year. Our last unsold J bull, he the son of Fletcher of Willow Glen, a really impressive animal. Jack Knife's temperament is easy going and independent and we really like his long body, blocky head and strong frame. He is very jet black, like his mother, a really handsome animal. Dam: Caitin of Tatlayoko [CAN] 16740 Sire: Fletcher of Willow Glenn [CAN] 17409

Merry Go Round of Tatlayoko

Merry Go Round is the daughter of Hopscotch, a young dark brindle cow with a great future ahead of her. Merry is a little shy but that may change over time in a new home. She is very pretty and a nice red under her calf coat. Her sire is our bright red home bred bull, Fergus of Tatlayoko, a son of our beloved Surlach, so a grandson of Gusgurlach. Some great genetics here!

Lord Lucan of Tatlayoko

A handsome black bull out of a black dam and a dark brindle sire. Parentage confirmed by DNA.

Lucky Strike of Tatlayoko

Lucky Strike was one of our late summer calves. Her mother is so barrel chested we weren't particularly sure she was bred so were delighted when Lucky hit the ground. She's a lively curious heifer who we think will be a friendly cow given gentle handling. Attractive light muzzle and frosted ear tips! Dam:Bonanza of Tatlayoko Sire: Fletcher of Willow Glen both confirmed by DNA

Last Laugh of Tatlayoko

This lovely red heifer is the last of our 2023 calves - a bit of a surprise as her mother, Windjammer of Tatlayoko, is a broad healthy older cow we assumed hadn't caught. But Fletcher of Willow Glen had done his work and this nice little heifer is the result. She is understandably the smallest of the 2023 heifers still but bigger than the 2024. Lots of growing yet to come!
